Ghostland Featuring Sinéad O'Connor & Natacha Atlas
Guide Me God - Vinyl 2

Listening notes

Released in 2003 on Tommy Boy Silver Label, "Guide Me God - Vinyl 2" (catalog number TB-2396-0) brings together an unlikely combination of names under the Ghostland project banner: Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor and Egyptian-British vocalist Natacha Atlas. The release sits at the intersection of electronic, trance, and tribal genres, a classification that reflects the ambitions of the project if not its full complexity.

As a vinyl single, this second volume presents three mixes across its two sides. The A-side opens with the Jet Extended Mix at six minutes and twenty seconds, followed by a Paul van Dyk mix running seven minutes and twenty-eight seconds. Van Dyk, a prominent figure in the trance world, contributes one of the two comparatively shorter cuts here. The B-side is given over entirely to Mr. Sam's Spiritual Son of God Vocal Remix, an eleven-minute-and-thirteen-second version that commands the bulk of the record's running time by a considerable margin.

The pairing of O'Connor and Atlas is notable on its face. O'Connor had long been associated with emotionally direct vocal performances, while Atlas had built a reputation working across Arabic musical traditions and electronic production. How those qualities interact within this specific project is something listeners will need to assess for themselves.

Tommy Boy Silver Label served as a subsidiary imprint of Tommy Boy Entertainment, and this release carries its catalog designation accordingly. The format is standard vinyl, and the record appears in the electronic and trance single tradition of extended remixes designed for DJ use, a purpose the track lengths and mix credits seem to support.
