Gum
Vinyl Anthology

Listening notes

Gum's Vinyl Anthology, released in 2004 on San Francisco's 23five label (catalog number 23five 005), collects twenty tracks across two discs in the electronic and experimental genres. The release runs to a substantial total duration, with the program spread unevenly across its discs: disc one carries thirteen tracks, disc two seven.

The sequencing reveals a marked range in track lengths. Disc one opens with "Stormy Weather" at 3:54 and moves through shorter pieces — "Testicle Stretch" at 2:05, "Smooth Torture In Exile" at 2:17, and "Stomach Irritations" at just over a minute — alongside the extended "Sporadic Acts Of Violence" at 10:19 and "Outfits For Agony" at 8:15. The disc closes with "Live At Hard Times, Melbourne, Australia, 1987," a 21:03 piece whose title places it at a specific venue and date. Disc two follows a similar pattern of contrasts, with three tracks clustered near six minutes — "1-800-GUM," "Okefenokee," and "Cicada Material" — before the program opens into longer material: "Banning" at 20:26, "Melted Limp Fallout" at 18:14, and "Blood On The Floor" at 13:42. "TV Eye" at 2:45 stands apart from the surrounding extended pieces.

Track titles across both discs draw on a notably varied vocabulary, ranging from the deadpan ("Fear," "Snowtown") to the elaborately descriptive ("Involuntary Orgasms During The Cleaning Of Automobiles," "Injected By A Certain Amount Of Charisma"). Whether these titles reflect source material, performance contexts, or other considerations is not indicated by the available documentation.

23five, which issued this release as catalog number 005, is a San Francisco-based label with a focus on experimental and electroacoustic work. This draft has not been fact-checked and should be reviewed before publication.
