Hattler
Vinyl Cuts 2

Listening notes

Hattler's Vinyl Cuts 2, released in 2018 on 36music (catalog number 13669), is an eight-track vinyl record that sits at the intersection of funk, soul, jazz, and what the release categorizes as future jazz and jazz-funk. The album's genre designations alone suggest a project comfortable moving across established idioms rather than committing rigidly to one.

The tracklist is divided evenly across two sides. Side A opens with "Silent Surveyor" at five minutes and twenty-six seconds, followed by "Believer" at four minutes and nine seconds, "Mayday In Paradise" at five minutes and seventeen seconds, and "C64" at four minutes and forty seconds. Side B leads with the album's longest track, "Wider," at five minutes and forty-five seconds, then moves through "Spy" at three minutes and forty-one seconds, "Someone Alive" at five minutes and twenty seconds, and closes with "Love And Freedom (No Smiley)" at five minutes and three seconds.

The total runtime lands at roughly thirty-nine minutes, a figure that falls comfortably within standard vinyl capacity and distributes relatively evenly across both sides. Track lengths range from the concise three minutes and forty-one seconds of "Spy" to the five minutes and forty-five seconds of "Wider," giving the record a degree of internal variety in pacing without any single track extending into extended-play territory.

The parenthetical in the closing track title, "No Smiley," is a detail worth noting for collectors and cataloguers, as it implies the possible existence of an alternate version under the same name. Whether that alternate version exists on this or another release would require additional verification.
