Janet Jackson
Go Deep (Promo 12'' Vinyl)

Listening notes

Janet Jackson's "Go Deep" arrived in 1997 on Virgin Records, and this promotional 12-inch release offers a substantial look at the remixing culture surrounding the track. Formatted across four sides, the release spans eight versions in total, with contributors including Masters At Work and Roni Size, alongside a Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis extended album mix.

Masters At Work account for the majority of the real estate here. Side A opens with their Thunder Mix at just over nine minutes, followed by a more compact Radio Edit at three minutes and forty-five seconds. Side B then extends the Masters At Work presence further, presenting the Spiritual Flute Mix at nearly eleven minutes — the longest version on the release — and a Bonus Beats cut running just over four minutes. Side C pairs a Roni Size remix, noted here with a shortened gap, against the Masters At Work Vocal Deep Disco Dub at eight minutes and twelve seconds. Side D closes the release with the Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis Extended Album Mix at five minutes and thirty-three seconds, followed by the Masters At Work Down Tempo Mix at five minutes and sixteen seconds.

The genres listed for this release — contemporary R&B, drum and bass, electronic, funk and soul, garage house, and house — reflect the range of remix approaches brought to the source material, from the drum and bass sensibility associated with Roni Size to the house and garage directions taken by Masters At Work.

It should be noted that the format listed for this entry is CDr rather than vinyl, despite the release being described as a promotional 12-inch. Collectors and researchers consulting this record should treat that discrepancy as a point requiring verification before drawing conclusions about the physical format.
