Jared Wilson
Roland Acid Again EP

Listening notes

Jared Wilson's Roland Acid Again EP arrived in 2019 on Undersound Recordings, catalogued as USR013. Released on vinyl, the four-track EP sits within the acid, electronic, and techno genres, and spans just under twenty-two minutes of music across two sides.

The A-side opens with "Always Something Else," running at five minutes and twenty-nine seconds, followed by the title track "Roland Acid Again" at four minutes and fifty-five seconds. The B-side carries "Peanutbutter Halloween Saltmix," clocking in at five minutes and fourteen seconds, before closing with "Nov27," the longest track on the record at six minutes and twenty-six seconds.

The EP's title and genre categorization place it squarely in an acid framework, a lineage that draws from the Roland TB-303 bass synthesizer and the Chicago house and Detroit techno scenes that elevated the instrument's distinctive sound in the late 1980s. Whether Wilson engages directly with that history or approaches it from a more contemporary angle is something the record itself will communicate to a listener; what can be said plainly is that the genre tags applied to this release — acid, electronic, techno — reflect a set of stylistic expectations that have accrued considerable history by the time this EP appeared.

Undersound Recordings issued the release under a catalog sequence that places USR013 as the label's thirteenth entry, suggesting a label of modest but deliberate output at the time of this EP's appearance.

The tracklist titles themselves are worth noting for their variety in register. "Always Something Else" and "Roland Acid Again" read as relatively straightforward, while "Peanutbutter Halloween Saltmix" departs markedly in tone, and "Nov27" offers a spare, datestamp-style title that gives away nothing about its contents.
