Jean-Jacques Perrey
Prélude Au Sommeil

Listening notes

Jean-Jacques Perrey's "Prélude Au Sommeil" was released in 2018 on Fantôme Phonographique, catalog number OME1003, as a vinyl record. The release is catalogued under a notably wide range of genres, including Abstract, Ambient, Drone, Electroacoustic, Electronic, Experimental, and New Age, suggesting a work that resists straightforward categorization within any single tradition.

The record's structure is straightforward in format but substantial in duration. Both sides of the vinyl present the same title, "Prelude Au Sommeil," with the A side running 25 minutes and 29 seconds and the B side running 25 minutes and 20 seconds. Together the two sides account for just over fifty minutes of continuous material spread across the record's two faces. The decision to present the same titled piece on both sides, with slightly differing durations, is a structural choice worth noting for collectors and researchers attempting to document the release accurately.

The title itself translates from French as "Prelude to Sleep," a phrase that, taken alongside the genre classifications of Ambient, Drone, and New Age, points toward an extended, unhurried work. Whether that framing reflects the music's character in practice is beyond what the available documentation confirms, and collectors should treat any broader claims about the listening experience with appropriate skepticism until primary sources are consulted.

Perrey is a figure with a long history in electronic music, though this draft makes no claims about how "Prélude Au Sommeil" connects to or departs from earlier periods of his work, as no verified documentation supporting such comparisons has been provided here.

Fantôme Phonographique is listed as the releasing label. No additional information about pressing origin, edition size, or variant pressings has been confirmed for this draft and should not be assumed.
