Joey Negro
Locked In The Vinyl Cellar

Listening notes

Released in 2009 on Z Records (catalog number ZEDDCD015), Joey Negro's "Locked In The Vinyl Cellar" is a two-disc CD compilation that draws across the genres of deep house, disco, funk, soul, and electronic music. The set spans a total of thirty tracks across its two discs, making it one of the more substantial releases in the Z Records catalog from that period.

The first disc carries eighteen tracks, among them titles such as "D.I.Y Disco," "Warehouse (Days Of Glory)," "Jungle Juk (TSOP)," "Pacific Dream," and a version of "People Hold On" credited as the Blaze New Jersey Jazz Mix. The range of genre tags associated with the release — house, deep house, disco, funk, and funk/soul among them — is reflected in the variety of track titles across the disc.

The second disc of twelve tracks functions in part as an edit disc, presenting Joey Negro edits of several tracks that appear in different form on disc one, including "Straight From The Heart," "Zion Gates Dub," "Saved By Your Love," "Sweet Ladies," "Slip Your Disc To This," "Warehouse (Days Of Glory)," and "Feeling Love." The second disc also includes a full-length version of "Maxx Axe," a club mix of "Le Champagne," and a Joey Negro edit of a track titled "Le Roc," which does not appear on the first disc. "Moon Child" and the Blaze New Jersey Jazz Mix of "People Hold On" appear on both discs.

The title's explicit reference to vinyl, combined with the compilation's broad sweep of house and disco-adjacent genres, positions the release squarely within the crate-digging and collector culture that has long surrounded Z Records as a label.
