Mark Gillman (2)
The Vinyl Frontier 02

Listening notes

Released in 2004 through EMI Music South Africa (Pty) Ltd., The Vinyl Frontier 02 is a compilation mixed by Mark Gillman (2), catalogued under the reference CDKLASS(WL)048. The release appeared in CD format and draws from a broad range of electronic dance genres, spanning deep house, disco, electronic, garage house, house, tech house, and trance.

The seventeen-track programme offers a cross-section of club-oriented material from the period. Several entries arrive in remixed form, indicating that the compilation drew on versions already circulating within DJ and dance culture rather than presenting exclusively original edits. Among the reworkings listed are a Martin Solveig remix of "Pop Muzak," an Andy Funk mix of "Blow," a Monkey Bars remix of "Steppin' Out," an ATFC instrumental of "Lola's Theme," a Jules Spinner remix of "2 Million Ways," and a Meat Katie remix of "Flashdance." The inclusion of named remixers across multiple tracks points to a tracklist assembled with some attention to the varied remix landscape active in electronic music at that time. A dub variant also appears, with "Up & Down" presented in what is identified as a Hot 22 Dub configuration.

The title's invocation of vinyl as a reference point is notable given that the release itself was issued on CD, a format distinction that a collector or researcher consulting this entry should register.

As a South African EMI release, the compilation occupies a specific regional context within the broader international electronic music market of 2004. Beyond these documented details, no further verified information about personnel, production circumstances, or distribution is available to this draft.
