Mettle Music
Moodswings - The Vinyl Collection - Volume 1

Listening notes

Mettle Music's self-titled imprint launched in 2004 with catalog number MM 001, a release positioned as the first entry in a projected series titled Moodswings - The Vinyl Collection. The choice to open a new label with a volume-numbered collection signals an intent to build something ongoing, though what followed remains outside the scope of this entry.

The record is a three-track twelve-inch pressed in the deep house and electronic house tradition. Side A is given over entirely to "Latin Horns," which runs to eight minutes and fifty seconds, a runtime suited to the extended listening demands of dance floor programming. The B-side carries two tracks: "Latin Horns (Club Dub)," a six-minute-and-thirty-five-second alternate treatment of the A-side cut, and "Pacific Motion," which closes the record at six minutes and twelve seconds. The structural logic here is familiar to the format — a full version leading, a dub or stripped variation following, with a second original completing the package.

The series framing of the title is worth noting as a curatorial statement. Describing a debut release as Volume 1 of a vinyl collection positions the label from the outset as an archivally minded operation, one treating its output as a body of work rather than a sequence of individual singles. Whether that framing was fulfilled across subsequent releases is not addressed here.

As MM 001, this pressing carries the distinction of being the label's inaugural catalog entry, a detail of straightforward documentary interest to those tracing the imprint's history. Genre categorization across the available record encompasses deep house, electronic, and house, reflecting the range the label chose to claim for itself at the point of launch.
