Petr Serkin
Woodmaster

Listening notes

Released in 2014 on Freedom Sessions Records, Woodmaster is a four-track vinyl EP by Petr Serkin, catalogued as FREES05. The release sits within the deep house and electronic genres, and its format places it squarely in the tradition of the twelve-inch dance single as a vehicle for extended, floor-oriented material.

The EP is structured across two sides. The A-side opens with the title track, "Woodmaster," running at five minutes and twenty-two seconds, followed by "Dirty Hero" at five minutes and twenty-three seconds — a near-identical duration that gives the first side a sense of measured pacing. The B-side carries the longer material: "In Focus" clocks in at six minutes and forty-four seconds, making it the most expansive piece on the record, while closer "Rooftop" rounds out the programme at five minutes and fifty-one seconds. In total, the four tracks account for just over twenty-three minutes of music across both sides.

Freedom Sessions Records, identified here by the prefix FREES in its catalog numbering, issued this as its fifth release under that system. The catalog number FREES05 situates Woodmaster as an early entry in the label's catalog, though what preceded or followed it on the imprint is beyond the scope of this entry.

As a vinyl release in the deep house and electronic space from 2014, the EP belongs to a period when physical dance music releases on twelve-inch continued to serve both DJs and collectors, though no specific claims about its circulation or reception are made here. What the record offers on paper is a concise, evenly weighted programme of tracks by an artist working within an established electronic idiom on a modest independent label.
