Russell Haswell
5" Vinyl Series LP

Listening notes

Russell Haswell's 5" Vinyl Series LP was released on Downwards in 2012 under catalog number LINO 56. The release sits within the electronic, experimental, and noise genres, and spreads ten tracks across two sides of vinyl.

Side A opens with "Chua Rave" and moves through "T.I.A.T.W.A.S.W.S," "Tribute To Sacher-Pelz," "Chua Acid," and "Chua Doom Metal Rave Drone." Side B carries "Harshing," "N0!se Resource," "Mercury (Crop)," "Chua N0!se," and closes with "Bonus (Bonus) Beats." Track durations are not documented here.

The tracklist itself offers a degree of transparency about Haswell's preoccupations. The recurring "Chua" prefix appearing across three titles — "Chua Rave," "Chua Acid," and "Chua N0!se" — suggests a thematic or technical thread running through portions of the record, though the nature of that connection is not elaborated in the available documentation. Title constructions like "N0!se Resource" and "Doom Metal Rave Drone" point toward genre terminology used in a deliberate, if oblique, way. "Tribute To Sacher-Pelz" carries a proper-noun specificity that separates it from the surrounding titles without further context being available to clarify its reference.

Downwards, the Birmingham-based label associated with Karl O'Connor, has maintained a consistent focus on industrial, techno, and experimental work since its founding. The 5" Vinyl Series LP carries catalog number LINO 56 within that imprint's output.
