Snarky Puppy & Metropole Orchestra
Sylva

Listening notes

Sylva, released in 2015 on Impulse! Records, represents a collaboration between Snarky Puppy and the Metropole Orchestra. The record carries catalog number 472 225 9 and was issued in a double-vinyl format spanning three sides of program material across what the format listing designates simply as two records.

The album sits at the intersection of the Funk / Soul and Jazz genres, a pairing that reflects the dual sensibilities Snarky Puppy had established as a working ensemble before this project brought them together with the Dutch Metropole Orchestra.

The six-track sequence is distributed across three labeled sides. Side A opens with "Sintra" at three minutes and thirty-two seconds, followed by "Flight" at six minutes and three seconds, and closes with "Atchafalaya" at six minutes and four seconds. Side B is dominated by "The Curtain," a composition running fifteen minutes and nine seconds, with "Gretel" at four minutes and eighteen seconds rounding out the side. Side C is given over entirely to "The Clearing," which runs nineteen minutes and twenty-three seconds, making it the album's longest single piece by a considerable margin.

The total program time, calculated from the tracklist, runs to approximately fifty-four and a half minutes. The distribution of that time across the three playable sides — with Side C dedicated to a single extended piece — suggests a deliberate structural approach to how the music was arranged for the vinyl format.

Impulse! is a label with a long association with jazz recordings, and its involvement here places Sylva within that catalog context. Beyond these documented particulars, additional details about the recording, personnel, or pressing specifications are not confirmed in the available data and are omitted from this draft accordingly.
