Listening notes
Tuxedomoon's The Vinyl Box, issued by Crammed Discs in 2015 under catalog number cboy2222, is a ten-record box set collecting material that spans a substantial portion of the group's catalog. The set organizes its contents across sides A through T, with individual records devoted to albums including Half-Mute, Desire, Holy Wars, Ship Of Fools, You, The Ghost Sonata, Cabin In The Sky, Bardo Hotel Soundtrack, and Vapour Trails, followed by a closing section titled Appendix.
The sheer scope of the tracklist is worth noting on its own terms. Side A opens with "Nazca" and moves through early titles such as "59 To 1," "Fifth Column," "Tritone (Musica Diablo)," and "James Whale." The Desire portion adds tracks including "Victims Of The Dance" and "Incubus (Blue Suit)." Holy Wars contributes "In A Manner Of Speaking" alongside "Bonjour Tristesse" and "Hugging The Earth." The Ghost Sonata sides are among the most densely programmed in the set, running from "The Funeral Of A Friend" through "An Unsigned Postcard" across sides K and L. Cabin In The Sky and Bardo Hotel Soundtrack together account for four full sides, with the latter carrying titles such as "Effervescing In The Nether Sphere," "Prometheus Bound," and a trio of "The Show Goes On" entries.
The Appendix, spread across sides S and T, gathers material with dates appended directly to the track titles, ranging from 1977 through 2008, among them "I Heard It Through The Grapevine 1977," "Ballad Of A Coal Miner 1978," "Nimrod 1986," and "Boxman 2 2008."
The set is cataloged across genres including ambient, art rock, avant-garde, classical, darkwave, electronic, experimental, neo-classical, and rock, a range that the tracklist itself, considered purely as a document, does not contradict. Fact checker should verify individual album assignments, side sequencing accuracy, and whether the Appendix tracks represent previously unreleased or compiled material.
