Vanilla (17)
Moonlight

Listening notes

Released in 2017 on Vinyl Digital (catalog number VinDig267), Moonlight is a double LP by Vanilla (17), spread across four sides and nineteen tracks. The release sits at the intersection of boom bap, downtempo, electronic, hip hop, instrumental, and jazz, a combination of genres that the label itself lists for the record.

The tracklist opens on the A side with "2AM (Intro)," a brief one-minute-and-two-second piece that leads into "Sakura," "Rise," "Crystals," "The Love," and "Forgettin'." The B side carries four tracks: "Cold Outside," "Snowdance," "Lazy Days," and "Time," with "Snowdance" running the longest of that grouping at four minutes and forty-five seconds.

Side C begins with a second short interlude, "Healer," at just under a minute, before moving into some of the record's longer pieces. "Visions" runs six minutes and forty-six seconds, making it the longest track on the release. "Ritual," "Fusion," and "Keep On" follow, with "Keep On" reaching exactly five minutes. The D side closes the album with "Waves," "Home," the title track "Moonlight," and "Fuji Pt. II (Battlecry)."

Across the four sides, the total runtime is substantial, reflecting a format choice that accommodates extended material without compression onto a single record. The use of two brief interludes — one at the opening of the A side, one at the opening of C — gives the double LP a loose structural logic, dividing the full sequence into two broader halves.

Vinyl Digital is a label with an ongoing focus on hip hop and electronic music releases in physical formats. Moonlight represents a catalog entry consistent with that focus.
