Belgian New Beat (The Vinyl Box)

Listening notes

Belgian New Beat (The Vinyl Box), released in 2018 on the 541 label (catalog number 541794), is a ten-record vinyl box set collecting material from the New Beat genre. The set spans genres listed as Acid House, Electro, Electronic, New Beat, and Synth-pop, reflecting the stylistic range associated with Belgian New Beat as a category.

The box set is organized across ten discs, designated 1/10 through 10/10, with sides running sequentially from A through T. The full tracklist comprises 57 tracks. Individual track lengths vary considerably across the set, ranging from under three minutes — "Death Disco" at 2:38 — to over eight minutes, with "Baby Wants To Ride" running 8:36 and "Looking From A Hilltop (Megamix)" at 8:09. Many entries are identified by specific mix designations, including "Church Mix," "New Beat Mix," "Destruction Mix," "Monday Morning Mix," and others, indicating the compilation draws on distinct versions rather than standardized album edits.

The track titles themselves suggest the breadth of source material the compilers drew upon, with entries such as "Acid Pages (Church Mix)," "Total Recall (New Beat Mix)," "Mandate My Ass (New Beat Mix)," "Noise Gate (Sancho Mix)," and "Acid Generation (Bonus Beats)" among the 57 listed. The presence of instrumental and dub versions alongside vocal tracks — for instance, "Where Are You? (Instrumental)," "Witness The Change (Dub Version)," and "Automan (Dub Mix)" — further illustrates the varied nature of the program.

As a box set format released in 2018, it represents a substantial physical document of the New Beat catalog as curated by the 541 label under that catalog number.
