Listening notes

Delicious Vinyl All-Stars: Rmxxology was released by Delicious Vinyl in 2008 under catalog number DV75469. The CD compiles fifteen tracks, running across a broad sweep of genres that the label itself catalogued as including abstract, breakbeat, disco, electro, electronic, folk, funk and soul, hip hop, hip-house, house, instrumental, pop, pop rock, and rock. That breadth alone signals an ambitious reach across the label's back catalog and beyond.

The tracklist draws on familiar Delicious Vinyl titles. Young MC's "Bust A Move," Tone Loc's "Wild Thing," The Pharcyde's "Passin' Me By" and "Runnin'," and Fatlip's "What's Up Fatlip?" all appear here in reworked form, sitting alongside Eminem's "Slaughtahouse" and Karen Young's "Bust a Move" ancestor "Freak-A-Zoid," which opens the set as the self-styled Rmxxology theme at five minutes and thirty-four seconds. The remixers enlisted for the project include Don Rimini, Peaches, Pink Enemy, Philippians, Breakbot, Aaron LaCrate and Debonair Samir, Mr. Flash, and Hot Chip, the last two of whom each contribute both a full version and an instrumental version of their respective reworks.

Five of the fifteen tracks are instrumental versions, accounting for a substantial portion of the running time and giving the collection a functional, DJ-friendly dimension that aligns with its genre categorizations. The longest track is Peaches' remix of "Wild Thing" at six minutes and five seconds; the shortest is Breakbot's remix of "What's Up Fatlip?" at three minutes and one second, a duration shared exactly by its instrumental counterpart.

As a document of how Delicious Vinyl's catalog was being reinterpreted in 2008, Rmxxology offers a tracklist that spans the label's founding hip hop identity and reaches into the wider electronic and dance music landscape that surrounded it at the time of release.
