Flying Vinyl: June 2016

Listening notes

Flying Vinyl's June 2016 box set, catalogued as Issue 13, arrived as part of the London-based subscription service's ongoing project of delivering new music directly to listeners on vinyl. Released in 2016 under the Flying Vinyl (2) label, the set collects ten tracks spread across multiple records, with each side given over to a single song — a format that reflects the service's underlying ethos of presenting emerging artists in a dedicated, unhurried way.

The ten tracks span a notably wide range of catalogued genres, including electro, electronic, indie rock, pop, rock, and synth-pop, suggesting a deliberately varied curatorial approach across the issue. The selections move from "Be Complete" on the A-side through to "Mr Dan's Inside Out Dub" closing out the J-side, with titles such as "Spotless Mind," "Elodie," and "Jigsaw" occupying the middle positions. The one-track-per-side configuration means each piece exists in relative isolation, without the sequencing pressures that a conventional album format would impose.

Issue 13 represents a mid-point in Flying Vinyl's 2016 output. The subscription model the service operated on positioned physical vinyl not as a retrospective format but as a vehicle for new and emerging work, and this box set fits that pattern. No track durations are listed in the available documentation for this release.

As an artifact, the set sits within a broader moment of renewed collector and listener interest in vinyl as a format, though the specific circumstances of this issue's production and distribution remain outside the scope of verified information currently attached to this release. Fact checker should confirm artist attributions for individual tracks, as performer details are absent from the available data.
