Monkey Business: The 7" Vinyl Box Set

Listening notes

Trojan Records released Monkey Business: The 7" Vinyl Box Set in 2017 under catalog number TJBOX002. The set collects ten seven-inch singles in the reggae genre, spanning titles drawn from the label's catalog.

The ten discs, designated TBX001 through TBX010, each carry an A-side and a B-side pairing. The tracklist includes "Israelites" backed with "007 (Shanty Town)," "Return Of Django" with "Tighten Up," "Wet Dream" with "Bangarang," "John Jones" with "Sufferer," "Hang 'Em High" with "No More Heartaches," "Mama Look Deh" with "Them Laugh And A Kiki," "Monkey Man" with "Long Shot Kick De Bucket," "(To Be) Young Gifted And Black" with "Liquidator," "54 - 46 Was My Number" with "Pressure Drop," and "Double Barrel" with "Monkey Spanner."

The box set format mirrors the original seven-inch single as a physical object, presenting each selection as a discrete disc rather than consolidating the material onto a longer-playing format. Trojan Records, the label responsible for this release, has operated as a catalog home for Jamaican popular music in the United Kingdom. The 2017 release date places this set among a number of physical media reissue products that emerged during a period of renewed commercial interest in vinyl formats.

The various-artist framing of the set means the ten singles represent multiple performers rather than a single act, consistent with Trojan's role as a multi-artist label rather than a project affiliated with one recording name.
