Natural Selections - A Compilation From Delicious Vinyl

Listening notes

Released in 1994 on Delicious Vinyl, Natural Selections: A Compilation From Delicious Vinyl (catalog number 7567-92373-2) is a CD collection drawing from the label's roster across five genre classifications: Acid Jazz, Dancehall, Electronic, Hip Hop, and Reggae. The breadth of those categories alone signals that this was not a release built around a single sound, but rather an attempt to represent the range of what Delicious Vinyl was putting out during that period.

The compilation runs twelve tracks with a total playing time that falls comfortably within the standard CD format. Sequencing moves from the five-minute-forty-five-second opener "4 Better 4 Worse" through a varied middle section that includes "Cease & Seckle," "Country Funkin'," and "Born To Roll" before arriving at the longest cut on the record, "Pork," at just over six minutes. The back half of the sequence includes "The B-Side," "How Deep Is Deep," and the closing "Hard Rhymes," which runs five minutes and nine seconds. One track, "Boom Shak A Tack," is identified specifically as a Dancehall Remix, making it the only entry on the tracklist noted as a remix version.

Track lengths across the twelve selections range from three minutes and forty-eight seconds to just over six minutes, giving the compilation a measured, album-length feel rather than a quick sampler. No individual artist credits are confirmed in the available data, so attribution for specific tracks is not addressed here.

For collectors and researchers interested in the Delicious Vinyl catalog, this release documents the label operating across a notably wide stylistic range as of 1994. Whether used as an entry point into the label's output or as a period reference, the catalog number 7567-92373-2 should aid in identification.
