Newvelle Records Season Five Luxury Box Set (Six 180g Clear Vinyl LPs)

Listening notes

Newvelle Records released its Season Five luxury box set in 2019, bringing together six individual albums under catalog numbers NV025 through NV030, each pressed on 180-gram clear vinyl. The set is a jazz compilation featuring recordings from six distinct artist projects, spanning a combined tracklist of more than fifty individual pieces across twelve record sides.

The six albums collected here are Rufus Reid and Sullivan Fortner's Always In The Moment, Pablo Ablanedo's Chistreza, Dave Douglas and Elan Mehler's If There Are Mountains, Carmen Staaf's Woodland, Patrick Zimmerli's Book Of Dreams, and OWL Trio with Kurt Elling's Life Of The Party. Each album occupies two sides of a dedicated LP, running through a range of original compositions and standards. Reid and Fortner's contribution includes readings of "Sophisticated Lady" and "Duke Ellington's Sound Of Love" alongside original material. Zimmerli's set similarly pairs originals with "Insensatez" and "Fly Me To The Moon." The OWL Trio album closes the box with "We'll Be Together Again," "Time On My Hands," and "The End Of A Love Affair" among its selections.

Across the twelve sides, individual track durations range from just over one minute to roughly six and a half minutes. Carmen Staaf's Woodland opens with "Caterpillars" at one minute and six seconds before moving into longer pieces, while Patrick Zimmerli's side two includes "Morningside" and "Crow Or Dove," each exceeding six minutes.

The set was issued under the Newvelle Records label, which operates on a subscription model releasing albums in seasonal groupings. Season Five represents the label's fifth such collection. The clear vinyl format and box presentation are documented characteristics of this release.
