Only On Vinyl

Listening notes

Only On Vinyl is a various-artists compilation released by ZYX Music in 1999 under catalog number ZYX 60034-2. Despite its title's nod to the format that defined dance music culture through much of the preceding decade, the release was issued on CD. It spans the electronic, techno, and trance genres across two discs, presenting twenty tracks with a combined running time that extends well past two hours.

The tracklist is structured around remix culture, which was central to how club music circulated during this period. A significant portion of the tracks are identified by specific mix designations — the Cyber Remix, the Colosseum Mix, TC's Club Mix, the Longy Remix, the Global Mix, the Massive Mix, and others — indicating that the compilation drew on material that had already passed through additional production stages before being gathered here. The opening track, "Futuro (Cyber Remix)," runs six minutes and fifty-five seconds, and the same source recording reappears on the second disc in a different form as "Futuro (Straight Mix)," running five minutes and thirty-three seconds. This pairing offers a direct point of comparison between two versions of the same material within a single release.

Individual track lengths across both discs are consistent with extended dance edits rather than radio formats, with durations generally falling between five and eight minutes. The longest track on the release is "The Analog Signal" at eight minutes and twenty-three seconds.

ZYX Music, a German independent label, was an active presence in the European electronic and dance market during the 1990s, and Only On Vinyl sits within that broader catalog context. The release carries the volume designation implied by its numbering, suggesting it may be part of a series, though no additional series data is confirmed here.
