Reel People Music Vinyl Sampler Volume 1

Listening notes

Released in 2023 on Reel People Music, the Reel People Music Vinyl Sampler Volume 1 (catalog number RPMVS010) is a four-track various artists compilation pressed to vinyl. The release sits across genres including contemporary R&B, electronic, funk and soul, house, and soul, suggesting a label identity built around dance-floor-adjacent music with roots in classic Black American musical traditions.

The record opens on its A-side with "Don't Stop The Music" in an Art Of Tones Modern Disco Mix, running five minutes and twenty-eight seconds, followed by the seven-minute-and-fourteen-second "Stay This Way (Original Mix)." The B-side carries "Asking For A Friend" in a rework credited to Stro Elliot described as a Roller Rink Rework, clocking in at three minutes and fifty-two seconds, and closes with the six-minute-and-thirty-nine-second "Tonight We Ride (Vocal Mix)." The presence of named remixers and mix designations on at least two of the four tracks points to a release shaped in part by remix culture and the extended format conventions common to dance music.

As the first volume in what the title implies may be a continuing sampler series, the record appears to function as a promotional or curatorial document for the Reel People Music label itself, offering listeners a cross-section of material in the label's catalog or orbit. Whether additional volumes followed is not confirmed here.
