Retro Arena Vinyl Eight

Listening notes

Released in 2002 on Lightning Records, Retro Arena Vinyl Eight (catalog number LR-2002-023) is a various artists vinyl release spanning the electronic and hardcore genres. The record carries four tracks across its two sides, running just under nineteen minutes in total.

Side A opens with "James Brown Is Dead" at five minutes and thirty-eight seconds, followed by "The Dreamer" at four minutes and thirty-five seconds. Side B presents "Animals (Remix)" at four minutes and seventeen seconds, closing with "El Punto Final (Power Mix)" at four minutes and thirty-six seconds. The track durations are broadly consistent across both sides, suggesting a reasonably balanced listening experience by design, though individual track lengths naturally vary.

The title of the release places it within a series, the "Retro Arena" name implying this is the eighth installment under that umbrella on Lightning Records. Whether that series was a recurring compilation format or a loosely branded run of releases is not confirmed by the available information. The catalog number LR-2002-023 places it as the twenty-third catalogued release under the Lightning Records prefix for that year, which at minimum suggests the label was maintaining an active release schedule in 2002.

The pairing of electronic and hardcore as listed genres reflects a strain of music common to specialist labels and club-oriented compilations of the early 2000s, a period when such crossover releases frequently appeared on vinyl aimed at DJs and collectors alike. The remix and power mix designations on two of the four tracks indicate that at least some of the material was adapted or reworked specifically for this format, though the nature of those alterations is not documented here.
