Samurai Champloo - The Way Of The Samurai / Vinyl Collection

Listening notes

Released in 2013 on Ample Soul (catalog number AS044-1), *Samurai Champloo – The Way Of The Samurai / Vinyl Collection* is a various artists compilation drawing from the soundtrack of the anime series Samurai Champloo. The release spans three double-sided records, yielding six sides and nineteen tracks with a combined runtime that extends well past the hour mark.

The tracklist moves across a range of styles cataloged under genres including hip hop, jazzy hip-hop, breaks, downtempo, electronic, anison, and stage and screen. Titles such as "Battlecry," "Nightshift," "Numbernine (Back In Tyo)," and "Tsurugi No Mai" suggest the blend of contemporary urban production and Japanese subject matter that characterized the anime's musical approach. The six-sided format groups tracks across sides A through F, with Side D carrying four tracks — "The Stroll," "Silver Morning," "Tubed (Drum Please!!)," and "Funkin" — while the remaining sides each hold three. The collection closes on Side F with "Death Wish," "In Position," and "Sincerely," the last of which runs four minutes and forty-eight seconds, making it among the longer entries on the set alongside "World Without Words" at six minutes and thirteen seconds.

The multi-record configuration reflects a substantial body of material being brought together under a single release. Collectors and researchers interested in anime-adjacent vinyl or in the overlap between Japanese animation soundtracks and hip-hop and electronic music production will find this a notable entry in Ample Soul's catalog.
