Stockfisch Records - Vinyl Collection Vol. 2

Listening notes

Released in 2011 on the German imprint Stockfisch Records, Vinyl Collection Vol. 2 (catalog number SFR 357.8009.1) is a various-artists compilation spanning the label's documented interests in blues, folk, world and country music, and jazz. The release collects ten tracks spread across two sides of vinyl.

Side A opens with "Tief Im Innern" at three minutes and forty-nine seconds, followed by "That Rain" at four minutes and forty-one seconds, "Frogs" at four minutes and thirty-two seconds, "He Can Dance" at four minutes and thirty-four seconds, and "Westwinds," the shortest selection on the side, at three minutes and twenty-five seconds. Side B leads with "Let The Music Flow" at four minutes and thirty-eight seconds, then "Into The Light" at four minutes and one second, "Improvisation" — the briefest track on the compilation at one minute and forty-nine seconds — followed by "Carolina Song" at five minutes and twelve seconds, the longest track on the record, and closing with "Now So Far" at four minutes and forty seconds.

The sequence places its shortest entry, "Improvisation," in the interior of the B side rather than at an edge, a structural choice that breaks from the convention of bracketing briefer pieces at the start or close of a program. The total running time across both sides comes to approximately forty-one minutes and twenty-one seconds, a figure consistent with standard LP programming. The title designates this release as the second in what the label framed as a series under the Vinyl Collection name, though details of the broader series are not addressed here.
