The Stax Vinyl 7s Box

Listening notes

Released in 2017 on the Stax label, The Stax Vinyl 7s Box (catalog number STX00252) is a vinyl box set collecting fourteen tracks drawn from the label's catalog of funk and soul recordings. The set is formatted as a series of 7-inch singles, with each side assigned an alphabetical position running from A through N.

The tracklist spans a range of running times typical of the 7-inch single format, with most selections falling between roughly two and three and a half minutes. The longest track in the set is "Why Must Our Eyes Always Be Turned Backwards," logged at 4:39 and occupying side F. The shortest is "Special Kind Of Woman" at 1:58, found on side K. Other titles in the set include "I'm The One Who Loves You," "Sweet Sherry," "I'll Never Stop Loving You," "One More Chance," "The Whole Damn World Is Going Crazy," "Hey You! Don't Fight It!," "The Stars," "Friday Night," "Happy," "You're My Only Temptation," "Can You Win," and "(Let Hurt Put You In The) Loser's Seat."

The box set format mirrors the original delivery mechanism of much of Stax's output, a label whose releases were frequently issued as 45 rpm singles during its active years. Whether the individual discs in this set replicate original single configurations, or how the recordings were sequenced across the physical releases within the box, is not confirmed by the available data and should be verified before publication.

Personnel, mastering credits, pressing specifications, and information about which artists perform the individual tracks are not available from the verified facts on hand and should be researched and added by the fact checker prior to publication.
