The Vinyl Edge

Listening notes

Released in 1990 on First Play Records, The Vinyl Edge is a various-artists compilation issued under catalog number FPR 1. The record spans genres including electronic, indie rock, rock, and synth-pop, suggesting a curatorial intent to gather material from across a broad stylistic range rather than present a single unified sound.

The record is a standard vinyl format and carries eleven tracks across two sides. Side A opens with "High Loving" and continues through "Heart On My Sleeve," an untitled track at position A3, "Catch My Fall," and "Mr Clean." Side B extends to six tracks: "Filth," a second untitled piece, "The Stuff Dreams Are Made Off," "Masterful," "These Days Dont End," and "Slash & Burn." No track durations are documented in the available discographical data. The inclusion of two untitled tracks and the apparent absence of artist attributions in the verified record make it difficult to assign individual performances to specific contributors at this time.

The catalog number FPR 1 indicates this was the label's inaugural release, or at minimum the first entry in its primary catalog sequence. First Play Records does not appear prominently in widely referenced discographical sources, and documentation surrounding the label's history, roster, and subsequent output remains limited based on currently available information.

The compilation's genre spread — anchored by synth-pop and electronic elements alongside indie and broader rock material — places it within a recognizable moment in independent music at the turn of the decade, when small labels frequently assembled multi-genre samplers to introduce their rosters or test the market. Whether that description applies precisely here is a matter for further research.

Track durations, individual artist credits, and additional label information should be verified before this entry is considered complete.
