Vaultage 80: A Vinyl Chapter

Listening notes

Released in 1980 on Attrix Records, Vaultage 80: A Vinyl Chapter is a fourteen-track compilation catalogued as RB 11. The record spreads across two sides, with seven tracks on each, drawing together material that spans a notably wide range of genres: electronic, minimal, new wave, power pop, punk, and rock. That breadth alone marks it as a document of a particular moment when those categories were still actively being defined and frequently overlapping.

The tracklist is eclectic in title as well as style. Side A opens with "Head In My Bag" and moves through "Negative Conversation," "Motorway," "Extradition," "Never Again," "Red Gold And Green," and closes with "Do The Winklepicker." Side B runs from "The Russians Are Coming" through "Money," "Sinking Gondola," "You Do," "Blue Lagoon," and "Hidden From History," ending on "Have You Seen My Friend." The sequencing across both sides suggests an attempt to hold disparate sounds together under a single chapter heading, as the subtitle implies.

Attrix Records was a Brighton-based independent label, and the Vaultage series to which this release belongs was associated with the local music scene of that period. The 1980 release date places this compilation at a point when independent labels were operating as primary outlets for music that sat outside major label interest, particularly across the punk and post-punk spectrum.

No track durations are documented in the available catalog data. Personnel, pressing details, and recording information are not confirmed at this stage and should be verified before publication.
