Vinyl Virgins

Listening notes

Vinyl Virgins is a various-artists compilation released in 1981 on the Virgin label, issued under the catalog number Virgin 1. The record brings together twelve tracks drawn from a notably broad stylistic range, with genres spanning ambient, electronic, new wave, pop, punk, rock, and synth-pop. That breadth alone makes the compilation an artifact worth noting in any serious survey of what Virgin was releasing and licensing at the turn of the decade.

The record is a standard vinyl LP divided across two sides of six tracks each. Side A opens with "Bullet Proof Heart" at four minutes and eleven seconds and closes with "A Song From Under The Floorboards" at four minutes and fifteen seconds, the longest track on that side. In between sit "Promise," "My New Career," "Underpass," and "Marianne," with running times clustered in the three-to-four-minute range. Side B follows a comparable pattern, opening with "Silly Thing" and moving through "Respectable Street," "About Insomnia," "Celt," and "The Tide Is High" before closing on "Memories," the longest cut on the album at five minutes and five seconds.

The catalog number Virgin 1 is a detail worth flagging for a fact checker. Whether this represents a deliberate first-entry designation within a Virgin catalog sequence or a coincidence of numbering is not confirmed by the available facts and should be verified before publication.

The compilation's genre list — stretching from punk and rock to ambient and synth-pop — reflects the kind of roster diversity Virgin had cultivated by the early 1980s. Taken together, the twelve tracks run to just under forty-three minutes, a reasonable side-per-side balance for a standard LP. Artist attribution for individual tracks is not included in the available source data and should be confirmed before this entry is considered complete.
