Yan Cook & Mays (5)
Old Friend EP

Listening notes

Released in 2017 on Planet Rhythm Records, the Old Friend EP is a four-track vinyl release from Yan Cook and Mays (5), catalogued under PRRUKLTDYCMS. The record sits within the deep techno and electronic genres, carrying the broader techno designation that Planet Rhythm has consistently worked within as a label.

The EP's two sides divide the material evenly. The A-side opens with "Fixed," running at six minutes and nine seconds, followed by the title track "Old Friend" at six minutes and eight seconds. The B-side carries "Coder" at five minutes and fifty-four seconds, with closing track "Tesla" extending the runtime to eight minutes and fourteen seconds, making it the longest piece on the record. The total runtime across all four tracks amounts to just over twenty-six minutes of material.

The tracklist construction follows a familiar EP format for the genre, with three tracks clustered in a similar duration range and one extended piece anchoring the flip side. Planet Rhythm Records, as the releasing label, provides the primary context for situating this release within the deep techno space.
