Daniela Mercury
Virtual Vinyl

Listening notes

Daniela Mercury's Virtual Vinyl was released in 2015 on DRG Brazil under catalog number DRG-CD-31641. The CD spans fifteen tracks and draws from a range of genres including Axé, Samba, Latin, and what Discogs broadly categorizes as Folk, World, and Country — a breadth that at least on paper suggests Mercury was working across a wide sonic and cultural territory.

The tracklist runs a generous total runtime, with individual cuts ranging from just over three and a half minutes to nearly five and a half. The longest track, "Extranhos Terrestres (Aperto De Mente)," clocks in at 5:34, while the shortest, "Tô Samba Da Vida," sits at 3:35. Several titles are worth noting for what they imply about thematic content: "De Deus, De Alah, De Gilberto Gil" references the celebrated Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil by name, and "Antropofágicos São Paulistanos" invokes the concept of anthropophagy, a loaded term in Brazilian cultural history associated with the Modernist movement of the early twentieth century. Whether those references are treated literally, ironically, or as homage is beyond what the available data can confirm.

The album title itself appears twice in the tracklist in different forms — "Vinil Virtual (Aperto De Mente 2)" at position twelve echoes both the album title and an earlier track subtitle, "Aperto De Mente," which first appears as a parenthetical on track nine. The repetition suggests a deliberate structural or conceptual thread running through the record, though its nature cannot be determined from metadata alone.
