Released by Revenant in 2005 under catalog number 6005, American Primitive Vol. I: Raw Pre-War Gospel (1926-36) is a various artists compilation presented on vinyl spanning four sides. The date range in the title places the source recordings across a decade that stretches from the mid-1920s through the mid-1930s, a period bracketed by the early years of commercial acoustic recording and the consolidation of electrical recording technology across the American South and beyond.

The compilation is catalogued under several genres: Blues, Country Blues, Folk, World, & Country, Gospel, and Ragtime. That breadth of categorization reflects the practical difficulty of drawing firm genre boundaries around recordings made before those categories were fully stabilized by the industry or by later scholarship.
